Alkanones (ketones) are generally obtained by the oxidation of secondary alkanols.

  • Primary alkanols → oxidize to alkanal (and further to alkanoic acid)

  • Secondary alkanols → oxidize to alkanones ✅

  • Tertiary alkanols → resist oxidation

  • Alkanoic acids → do not form ketones by oxidation
